In the nomination of Katie Hantke, the following was written:

This nurse is one of the strongest nurses on our unit and recently, this could not have been clearer.  On the night shift, we have been short staffed recently due to unforeseen staff departures. All of us have been adjusting our schedules and picking up extra shifts in order to make it smoother for us and the patients on our unit, Katie included. Two weeks ago, her older brother passed away at the young age of 25. It was traumatic and completely unexpected for Katie and her family. After taking a couple of shifts off to be with her family, Katie came right back to work and put her patients first even with all of the turmoil going on in her personal life. Her strength during this time has been an inspiration to all the nurses on our unit and she has used the experience of being the family member of someone in the hospital to better relate with our patient's families that are going through similar situations. Some nurses would not be able to return to work after something like that, especially since we are the surgical/trauma ICU, but seeing Katie turn her experience with her brother's untimely death into something she could use to help our patients proves her amazing dedication to being a nurse and how big her heart is.
